How to Make an Electric Guitar
![]() |
Even if you never use it, the knowledge of how to make an electric guitar can be good for all guitarists to have. Believe it or not, you can actually make your own working electric guitar in your basic home workshop. The first thing you will need is a strong, solid hardwood for the body. The better quality the wood, the better sound you are going to get. Hard, solid wood is going to provide a more accurate and pleasing tone than soft wood. Choose the best quality you can afford to ensure the wood is hard all the way through and doesn't have any soft parts. Even more important than the body wood is the neck wood you'll be using.
Maple is a nice wood for both the body and neck. It is able to stand up under the weight of metal strings and offers strength and stability. There are different grades of Maple you can choose from at your local home improvement store or lumber yard. Always choose the highest grade you can afford for the best results. It is crucial that your strings are able to be lined up properly on the neck. If you can choose laminated wood as opposed to unlaminated wood, laminated wood is always better. Once you've selected the right wood, it's time to create the guitar design.
Some people sketch the design for their guitar by hand, others use computer software. This is one of the most important parts of making your guitar. You want to design something that fits your preferences as far as size and shape is concerned. Scale length will need to be either 25.5 or 24.75 depending on your particular preferences. Once you've designed your body and neck and cut the shapes from the wood, it's time to start putting everything together. Create a snug pocket for the neck and attach it to the body with bolts and screws. If you've got basic knowledge of construction procedures, this will help you in your guitar building pursuit. Make sure to paint and varnish your guitar before adding hardware such as tuning pegs and strings.
