What are Electric Guitar Tabs and How Can They Help You?

If you want to learn the electric guitar, you will need to learn to read music. Electric guitar tabs offer an easy way for musicians to read notes and chords as opposed to reading sheet music or playing by ear. They're also easier to write than traditional sheet music. Basically, tablature is a diagram that shows the guitar strings. Where to put your fingers are indicated by dots. On guitar tabs, the strings are vertical lines and the frets are horizontal lines. Reading music using tablature is easy for even a beginner, which is why tablature is popular for piano players as well.
The various horizontal lines are called a staff while each vertical line stands for each one of the six guitar strings. You will notice there are numbers written on the strings which each designate a particular fret. There are special features such as hammer ons and bends that are shown on the tablature as other symbols such as an arrow, for example. Different tablature writers use different symbols and will almost always include a key that shows which symbol means what. Reading tablature may be challenging at first but with a little study and practice you'll get it down pat in no time.
There are various benefits of guitar tablature that cannot be found with sheet music. Ease of use is one. As mentioned before, it is much easier for a novice to learn how to read tablature than sheet music. Not only that, but with a computer you can create, print and share tablature easily which is something you cannot do with traditional sheet music. This is why you will find so many different web sites offering thousands of guitar tabs for all kinds of songs. Just by performing a quick search engine query, you can find lots of great tabs absolutely free.
Ok, so you know how to read electric guitar tabs. Does this mean you shouldn't learn how to read sheet music? Of course not. Understanding how to do both can make you a better musician. Once you get the art of reading music down, you can start learning to play and compose by ear. Playing by ear means you can listen to a piece of music and play it back without reading anything. This is also a way many musicians compose their own songs.
