Tips for Changing Electric Guitar Strings
![]() |
Just like learning to play guitar, changing electric guitar strings is a skill that takes some practice to master. It is something that every guitarist will need to do at some point or another. Luckily, it does get easier the more often you do it. The first thing you will need before changing your strings are of course, replacement strings. Any music supply store will be able to tell you which strings are best for your guitar. You will also need some basic tools including a string winder and needle nose pliers.
The first thing to do, of course, is remove the string you want to replace. Many guitarists replace all their worn strings at one time, starting with the 6th string and working their way to the 1st one. Starting with the 6th string, use the winder to loosen the string and cut off the twisted end so that it slips out of the instrument. After that, simply remove the rest of the string from the tuning peg. When taking your string off, make sure you note how it goes in and out for easy replacement.
Now you need to get a replacement string from your package of new, unused strings. How you are going to feed the string into the guitar will depend on what kind you have. Some strings are fed via a hole in the body while others are fed through the tail piece. When you removed the old string you should have noticed how it is inserted. First, put the ball end of the string where it should be. Pull the string over the bridge up to the tuning peg and allow two or three inches for winding. You will need to cut most new strings to length. The tuning peg has a hole which the string is wound through before the peg is turned. Turn the peg until the string is tuned as it should be, then repeat with the remaining five strings.
When changing electric guitar strings, you will find it may be difficult to keep your guitar in tune at first. This is because new strings must be broken in, stretched and retuned. After changing your strings, have a guitar playing session to help loosen them up and tune as needed. You may find the process of changing strings a bit challenging the first few times you do it, but it will definitely get easier with practice -- just like playing guitar!
